The Project

This project was created as part of the UX introductory course at CareerFoundry. The main focus was to understand and apply the design thinking process while learning UX-related terms, tools and techniques.

Duration

1 month

The Problem

Many people start using apps to learn languages, but few of them stick to it – distractions pop up constantly. The task was to find a way to keep users motivated to study on a regular basis and help them learn new vocabulary.

Methods

  • Competitive Analysis
  • User Interviews
  • User Personas
  • User Flows
  • Low-, Mid- and High Fidelity Wireframes
  • Usability Testing

My Role

My role was to create a vocabulary learning app which enables users to methodically categorize, reference, and study new vocabulary and to bring concepts and vocabulary to life using visuals.

Tools
  • Figma
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe InDesign

Competitor Analysis

I conducted a competitor analysis with three competitors: Lexilise, Tobo and Mondly to understand what type of problems users face with competitors’ products and to highlight opportunities to meet an unfulfilled user need.

User Interviews

I conducted a competitor analysis with three competitors: Lexilise, Tobo and Mondly to understand what type of problems users face with competitors’ products and to highlight opportunities to meet an unfulfilled user need.

Key Findings

Proto Persona

The creation of a proto persona followed the analysis of the previously gathered data. Their main function was to assist and direct efforts towards refining GoLingo as to allow it to more effectively meet the personas’ needs.

User Flows

To determine how users can most effectively interact with the app, I created user flows on the main tasks Anastasia wants to perform. This allowed me to first determine how to structure the content of the app and which screens are needed to effectively get to the goal.

Wireframing

Now that I knew which screens were needed for my app, I started sketching my flows on paper to create a low-fidelity prototype to start testing GoLingo’s functionality and its core guiding principles in practice. By visualizing the different user flows, I was able to check if the user flow was intuitive and to ensure that it helped the user reach their goals quickly and easily.

Usability Testing

Conducting usability tests gave me the opportunity to see how the users interacted with GoLingo, to test if my design meets the users’ needs and to reveal any possible shortcomings of my design. I conducted the usability tests online via Skype in 10-15 minute sessions with a clickable low-fidelity prototype.

Key Findings

After evaluating the tests, four usability errors stood out that needed to be fixed:

  • After skipping the sign-up during onboarding, users could not find a way to sign up later on
  • Users thought that the indication ‘9 words’ underneath ‘Learn’ meant that they would only get to learn nine words
  • Some users were confused that there the icons ‘Daily Lessons’ and ‘Vocabulary’ were twice on the same screen (big buttons in the middle of the page and in the bottom navigation menu)
  • Some users felt overwhelmed by the structure of the dashboard and it did not feel intuitive to them to choose ‘Daily Lessons’ to practice and learn vocabulary

Design Iterations

GoLingo underwent several iterations based on the user feedback received during the usability tests.

Final Mockups

Lessons learned

This was my first UX project where I learned to implement the design thinking process. It was a long but exciting and rewarding journey that began with research and finished with creating high fidelity wireframes.

  • My prototype was not as intuitive as expected. Users were not able to complete certain tasks as easily and quickly as I thought.
  • I especially enjoyed interviewing people and learning about their motivations.
  • It turned out to be easier to record interviews instead of taking notes in order to be able to fully concentrate on the interviewee.
  • Interviewing users is challenging. It requires a lot of practice and preparation to ask the right questions.
